How to Find Your Janma Nakshatra by Date of Birth

A step-by-step guide to finding your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) using your date of birth. Understand what nakshatra means, how it differs from rashi, and use our free nakshatra finder tool.

Your Janma Nakshatra (జన్మ నక్షత్రం) is the lunar mansion — or birth star — that the Moon occupied at the exact moment of your birth. In South Indian Vedic astrology, the nakshatra is even more specific than the rashi (moon sign) and forms the foundation for personalised horoscope predictions, namegiving (namakaranam), and the Vimshottari dasha period calculations.

What is a Nakshatra?

The zodiac circle of 360° is divided into 27 equal segments of 13°20' each — these are the 27 nakshatras. The Moon takes approximately 27.3 days to travel through all 27, spending roughly one day in each. Your Janma Nakshatra is determined by which of these 27 segments the Moon was in at the time of your birth.

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet (lord), a deity, a symbol, and a set of characteristics that shape the personality and life themes of people born under it.

Nakshatra vs Rashi — Key Difference

While your rashi is one of 12 moon signs (each spanning 30°), your nakshatra is one of 27 birth stars (each spanning 13°20'). Every rashi contains 2.25 nakshatras. For example, Mesha rashi contains Ashwini, Bharani, and the first pada of Krittika.

Think of your rashi as your suburb and your nakshatra as your street — the nakshatra gives a more precise address within the zodiac.

Step-by-Step: How to Find Your Nakshatra

Method 1 — Use Our Free Nakshatra Finder (Recommended)

The simplest method: visit our Nakshatra page and enter your date of birth in the Nakshatra Finder tool. It calculates the Moon's position using the astronomical Moon position algorithm with Lahiri ayanamsa (the standard for Indian astrology) and returns your nakshatra instantly.

For maximum accuracy, provide your birth time and city as well — the Moon moves approximately 0.5° per hour, so a few hours can sometimes shift the nakshatra.

Method 2 — From Your Kundali

If you have a Kundali (birth chart) available, look for the Moon's position. The degree and sign of the Moon determines the nakshatra. For example, Moon at 15°00' Taurus (Vrishabha) = Rohini nakshatra (which runs from 10°00' to 23°20' Taurus).

Method 3 — From Physical Panchangam

Traditional Telugu families use a physical panchangam (almanac) for the year of birth. Looking up the Nakshatra column for your exact birth date gives the nakshatra that was prevailing at sunrise. If born after sunset, the next day's nakshatra may apply — this is why birth time matters.

The 27 Nakshatras and Their Lords

Here is a quick reference showing which planet rules each nakshatra:

  • Ketu: Ashwini, Magha, Mula
  • Venus: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
  • Sun: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
  • Moon: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
  • Mars: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha
  • Rahu: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
  • Jupiter: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
  • Saturn: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Mercury: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

The ruling planet of your birth nakshatra also determines the starting period of your Vimshottari dasha — the planetary period system used for timing events in your life.

Why Nakshatra Matters in Daily Life

  • Namakaranam — babies are traditionally named using the first syllable (akshara) of their birth nakshatra
  • Porutham (compatibility) — nakshatra matching is the basis of Telugu marriage compatibility checks
  • Daily predictions — nakshatra-based predictions are often more precise than rashi-level ones
  • Dasha periods — the starting dasha at birth is calculated from the nakshatra lord and the Moon's progress through the nakshatra at birth time
