How to Find Your Rashi (Moon Sign) — A Simple Guide

Learn how to find your rashi (moon sign) using your date of birth. In South Indian astrology, your rashi is based on the Moon's position, not the Sun.

In South Indian astrology (Jyothishamu), your rashi is determined by the position of the Moon at the time of your birth — not the Sun. This is one of the most fundamental differences between Western and Vedic astrology.

What is a Rashi?

A rashi is one of the 12 zodiac signs in Vedic astrology. The word "rashi" (రాశి) comes from Sanskrit and literally means "a heap" or "collection" of stars. Each rashi spans 30° of the zodiac circle, and the Moon moves through all 12 rashis approximately every 27.3 days.

The 12 Rashis

Here are all 12 rashis with their Telugu and English names:

  4. కర్కాటకం (Karka) — Cancer — Lord: Moon
  5. సింహం (Simha) — Leo — Lord: Sun

How to Find Your Rashi

To find your exact rashi, you need three things:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your time of birth (as precise as possible)
  • Your place of birth

Using these three inputs, an astrologer (or a birth chart calculator) determines where the Moon was positioned at the exact moment you were born. The zodiac sign the Moon occupied is your rashi.

Why Moon Sign, Not Sun Sign?

Western astrology uses the Sun sign because the Western tradition emphasizes the conscious self and outward personality. Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign because the Moon represents the mind (manas) in Indian philosophy — your emotions, instincts, and inner nature.

In practice, this means your Vedic rashi predictions are more about how you feel and react to events, while Western horoscopes tend to describe your outward traits.

Rashi vs. Nakshatra

Each rashi contains 2.25 nakshatras (star constellations). While your rashi gives a broad picture, your nakshatra provides more specific and personalized predictions. There are 27 nakshatras in total, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac.

For the most accurate predictions, you should know both your rashi and your nakshatra.
