How to Use Choghadiya for Daily Planning — A Complete Guide

Choghadiya divides the day into 8 auspicious and inauspicious time slots. Learn how to use Choghadiya timings to plan important tasks, travel, and business activities.

Choghadiya (also spelled Chogadia or Chogadiya) is a Vedic time-keeping system that divides the day into 8 equal slots, each named after one of seven planetary influences. The word comes from Sanskrit: cho (four) + ghadiya (a unit of ~24 minutes), though in modern usage each slot spans roughly 90 minutes depending on actual sunrise and sunset times.

The 7 Choghadiya Types

Every Choghadiya slot has a name that determines whether it is auspicious, neutral, or inauspicious:

  • AmritMost Auspicious — Best for all activities, health matters, wealth
  • ShubhAuspicious — Good for ceremonies, new beginnings, auspicious events
  • LabhAuspicious — Excellent for business, profits, investments
  • CharNeutral — Suitable for travel and movement-related activities
  • UdvegInauspicious — Avoid starting new ventures; government matters may be difficult
  • KaalInauspicious — Avoid most activities; however, Kaal Choghadiya is sometimes considered good for money matters in certain traditions
  • RogInauspicious — Avoid; associated with illness and conflict

Day vs. Night Choghadiya

There are two separate Choghadiya tables — one for the day (sunrise to sunset) and one for the night (sunset to next sunrise). Day Choghadiya is used for daytime activities; Night Choghadiya applies after sunset.

The sequence of Choghadiya slots changes every day based on the weekday. Each weekday has its own fixed pattern, calculated from the ruling planet of that day.

How Choghadiya Timings Are Calculated

The key principle: Choghadiya is anchored to the actual local sunrise, not a fixed 6:00 AM. The day is divided into 8 equal parts from sunrise to sunset, so the slot duration varies by location and season:

  • In summer (longer days): each day slot may be ~95–100 minutes
  • In winter (shorter days): each day slot may be ~80–85 minutes

This is why Choghadiya timings differ from city to city — Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi all have different sunrise times, producing different slot boundaries even on the same day.

Practical Guide: What to Do in Each Choghadiya
