Porutham — How to Check Telugu Marriage Compatibility (Ashtakoota)
Learn how Ashtakoota Porutham works in Telugu marriages — the 8 compatibility tests (Dinam, Ganam, Yoni, Rashi, Mahendra, Vedha, Stree Deergha, Rajju) explained simply.
Porutham (పొరుతం) — also called Ashtakoota matching — is the traditional Vedic method of assessing marriage compatibility. "Ashta" means eight and "koota" means group or test. The system evaluates eight specific areas of compatibility between a prospective bride and groom, based primarily on their birth nakshatras (and sometimes rashis).
In Telugu families, checking porutham is a standard step before finalising a marriage alliance. A minimum score (typically 18 out of 36) is considered necessary, though the weight of individual kootas — especially Rajju — matters more than the total score alone.
The Eight Kootas and Their Scores
1. Dinam (3 points)
Checks the health and day-to-day wellbeing of the couple. Calculated by counting from the girl's nakshatra to the boy's and dividing by 9. If the remainder is 1, 3, 5, or 7, it scores 3 points.
2. Ganam (6 points)
Each nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas: Deva (divine), Manava (human), or Rakshasa (demonic). Best compatibility is Deva-Deva (6 points). Deva-Manava and Manava-Manava score 6 or 5. Rakshasa-Rakshasa can work in some systems. Deva-Rakshasa is considered incompatible (0 points) and is one of the stricter tests.
3. Mahendra (—)
Counted from girl's nakshatra to boy's. If the count is 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, or 25, it is considered auspicious. Mahendra is often counted as a bonus check rather than a scored koota.
4. Stree Deergha (—)
The boy's nakshatra should ideally be at least 9 nakshatras ahead of the girl's. If the count from the girl to the boy is more than 9, it scores positively. This test checks for the longevity and happiness of the wife.
5. Yoni (4 points)
Each nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol (yoni). Compatibility is checked between the yonis of the bride and groom. Matching yonis score 4 points; friendly yonis score 2; neutral 1; enemy yonis score 0. This koota governs physical and intimate compatibility.
6. Rashi (7 points)
Compares the Moon signs (rashis) of the couple. Specific rashi combinations are assigned scores from 0 to 7. The lord planets of the respective rashis are also considered — friendly lords between the two rashis indicate harmony in domestic life.
7. Vedha (—)
Certain nakshatra pairs are considered mutually "harmful" (vedha). If the bride and groom's nakshatras form a vedha pair, the match is traditionally rejected regardless of the total score. This is a veto check, not a scored koota.
8. Rajju (—)
This is the most critical koota in South Indian tradition — often given veto power. The 27 nakshatras are divided into five groups called rajju based on the body part they represent (Pada/feet, Kati/waist, Nabhi/navel, Kanta/neck, Siro/head). A bride and groom with the same rajju are considered incompatible — it is believed to threaten the life or health of the husband. No amount of total score can override a rajju dosha in traditional Telugu matchmaking.
Minimum Score and Practical Considerations
The maximum total score across all scored kootas is 36. A score of 18 or above is considered the minimum acceptable. However, many astrologers in the Telugu tradition prioritise:
- No Rajju dosha
- No Vedha dosha
- Ganam compatibility (especially avoiding Deva-Rakshasa)
A score of 25+ with no major doshas is considered excellent. Between 18 and 24 is acceptable but may require remedies. Below 18 is traditionally rejected, though modern families often look at the overall picture with the guidance of a trusted astrologer.
Beyond the Score
Experienced astrologers also examine the full birth charts (kundalis) of both individuals — not just the nakshatra-based kootas. Factors like the 7th house (marriage), Venus (relationship), Mars (Kuja/Mangal dosha), and the navamsa (9th harmonic chart) all contribute to a complete picture of compatibility.
