Tulasi kalyanam and the lamps are done at dusk on Dwadashi. In 2026 Dwadashi lasts through the evening of November 21 (IST); the Ekadashi parana is done that morning.
Significance — ప్రాధాన్యత
Ksheerabdi Dwadashi falls on Karthika Shukla Dwadashi, the day after Utthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu rises from his four-month Yoga Nidra. In 2026 it is on Saturday, November 21: Dwadashi tithi runs from about 6:30 AM that morning to just before dawn on November 22 (IST).
The name means "Dwadashi of the Ocean of Milk" (Ksheera Sagara). In Telugu homes it is also called Chiluku Dwadashi, recalling the churning of the ocean. It is the day of Tulasi kalyanam — the sacred marriage of Tulasi with Lord Vishnu, who is represented by a branch of the usiri (amla) tree placed beside the tulasi plant.
The Karthika Puranam (chapter 12) singles out this Dwadashi as especially sacred and praises the gift of a Shaligrama on this day. Families who kept the Ekadashi fast break it (parana) on Dwadashi morning.
Rituals — పూజా విధానం
Break the Ekadashi fast (parana) on Dwadashi morning, if you fasted on Utthana Ekadashi
Clean and decorate the tulasi kota with turmeric, kumkum, flowers and a rangoli
Place a branch of the usiri (amla) tree beside the tulasi plant to represent Lord Vishnu
In the evening, perform Tulasi kalyanam — offer turmeric, kumkum, a small mangalasutram and new cloth, and recite the kalyana mantras or Vishnu Sahasranamam
Light lamps all around the tulasi kota at dusk
Offer naivedyam and distribute it to family and neighbours
Give a Shaligrama, lamps or food in charity if you can

Frequently Asked Questions — తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు
