Pratipada Tithi ends in the forenoon — all auspicious activities including Panchanga Sravanam should be completed before the tithi transition. The Abhijit Muhurtham (midday) is ideal for new ventures and resolutions for the new year.
Significance — ప్రాధాన్యత
Ugadi marks the beginning of the Telugu new year according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar. The word "Ugadi" is derived from the Sanskrit "Yuga" (era) and "Adi" (beginning) — literally the start of a new cycle. In 2026, Ugadi falls on April 4, ushering in the Parabhava Nama Samvatsara.
Ugadi is observed on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — the first day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra. According to Vedic tradition, Lord Brahma began creation on this very day, making it one of the most sacred new year observances in the Hindu calendar.
The day begins with an oil bath (abhyanga snanam), followed by the Panchanga Sravanam — a ceremonial reading of the new year's almanac by a learned jyotishi. The pandit reveals the year's Samvatsara name, the ruling planet, and predictions for agriculture, rainfall, and social conditions across the twelve rashis.
Ugadi is unique among Indian festivals in that it incorporates all six tastes (shadruchulu) into a single dish — Ugadi Pachadi — symbolising the bittersweet nature of life itself.
Rituals — పూజా విధానం
Rise before sunrise and take a ritual oil bath (nuvvula nune snanam)
Clean and decorate the home with fresh mango leaf torans (thoranam) on the doorway
Prepare and offer Ugadi Pachadi to the deity before partaking
Visit the temple for Ugadi special puja and darshan
Attend or listen to the Panchanga Sravanam (new year almanac recitation)
Offer neem flowers (vepa puvvulu) with jaggery and raw mango
Perform Pitru Tarpana if advised by the pandit
Exchange new clothes and gifts with family
Telugu Traditions — తెలుగు సంప్రదాయాలు
Mango leaf thoranam strung across doorways — fresh green mango leaves tied with a turmeric-dipped string ward off evil and invite Lakshmi
Vepa Puvvu Bellam (neem flowers mixed with jaggery) eaten first thing to acknowledge life's mix of joy and sorrow
Panchanga Sravanam at local temples — families gather to hear the new year prediction read aloud by a purohit
Bobbatlu (Puran Poli) and Pulihora prepared as prasadam and shared with neighbours
In coastal Andhra, newly harvested raw mangoes are used in the pachadi — each ingredient sourced fresh on the morning itself
In Telangana, the tradition of drawing elaborate muggulu (rangoli) patterns from sunrise is especially vibrant
