Porutham (Marriage Compatibility)
The Vedic marriage compatibility matching system based on nakshatra and rashi of the boy and girl.
Porutham (పొరుతం) is the compatibility matching system used in Telugu marriages. Two systems are commonly used: Ashtakoota (8-fold, North Indian origin, scored out of 36) and Dashakoota (10-fold, Telugu/South Indian tradition, pass/fail per koota).
In the Dashakoota system used by Telugu families, the 10 kootas are: Dina, Gana, Yoni, Rashi, Rasyadhipati, Rajju, Vedha, Vasya, Mahendra, and Stree Deergha. Among these, Rajju is considered the most critical — if both partners share the same Rajju group, it is considered very serious (Rajju Dosha).
The matching is done using the birth nakshatras and Moon signs of the prospective bride and groom. While porutham is an important first step, astrologers also examine individual charts for Mangala dosha, dasha compatibility, and other factors before recommending a match.
