Chapter 4 — the story
A childless king of Panchala, advised by Sage Pippalada, lights lamps at a Shiva temple through Karthika and is blessed with a son, Shatruji.
Shatruji grows up wayward and pursues a Brahmin's wife. On a Karthika Pournami that falls on a Monday, at his request she twists the end of her sari into a wick and lights a castor-oil lamp at a Shiva temple. Her husband, lying in wait, kills them both and then himself. Because of that lamp, Shiva's messengers take the lovers to Kailasa — and with a share of its merit, the husband goes with them.
What this chapter teaches
A single lamp lit in Karthika before Shiva carries extraordinary merit — even for those who did not deserve it.
How to read the Karthika Puranam
- Read or listen to one chapter each day of Karthika Masam, usually in the evening after lighting the deepam.
- Many families read together after the pre-dawn Karthika snanam or at the Tulasi kota.
- These are short summaries; for the full text, read a printed Karthika Puranam or listen to a pravachanam.
