What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi (ఏకాదశి) is the 11th tithi (lunar day) that occurs twice in every lunar month — once during Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and once during Krishna Paksha (waning moon). The word "Ekadashi" literally means "eleventh" in Sanskrit.

Ekadashi is considered the most sacred fasting day in Vaishnavism. According to the Padma Purana, Lord Vishnu Himself declared that Ekadashi fasting destroys sins and grants moksha. The vrat (fast) is observed by millions of Telugu families as part of their regular spiritual practice.

Each Ekadashi has a specific name and significance — Vaikunta Ekadashi (Mukkoti Ekadashi), Nirjala Ekadashi, Pandava Ekadashi, etc. The most important is Vaikunta Ekadashi in Dhanus month, when the gates of Vaikuntham are believed to open for devotees.

What to Do on Ekadashi

Observe a fast — avoid rice and grains. Consume fruits, milk, sabudana (sago), potatoes, and nuts.

Wake up early (Brahma Muhurta) and take a bath before sunrise.

Visit a Vishnu temple or perform puja at home with tulasi leaves, flowers, and incense.

Read or listen to Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita, or Ekadashi Mahatmya.

Maintain a sattvic (pure) diet and mind throughout the day.

Break the fast (Parana) the next morning during the prescribed time window (usually before Dwadashi ends).

What to Avoid on Ekadashi

Rice and all grains (wheat, dal, etc.) — this is the primary Ekadashi rule.

Onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food.

Sleeping during the day — stay awake and engage in spiritual activities.

Negative speech, anger, and gossip.

Starting major new ventures (some traditions advise restraint).

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Ekadashi come?

Ekadashi occurs twice every lunar month — on the 11th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and the 11th day of Krishna Paksha (waning moon). That means approximately 24 Ekadashis per year.

Can I eat rice on Ekadashi?

No. The primary rule of Ekadashi fasting is to avoid rice and all grains. You can eat fruits, milk, sabudana (sago), potatoes, peanuts, and coconut. Some strict observers do nirjala (waterless) fasting.

What is the most important Ekadashi?

Vaikunta Ekadashi (also called Mukkoti Ekadashi) falling in Dhanus/Margashira month is considered the most sacred. It is believed that the gates of Vaikuntham (Lord Vishnu's abode) open on this day.

When should I break the Ekadashi fast?

The fast should be broken the next morning (Dwadashi) during the Parana time window — usually after sunrise and before Dwadashi tithi ends. Check the panchangam for exact Parana time.
