What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra (literally "science of architecture") is an ancient Indian system of design and spatial arrangement that dates back over 5,000 years. Rooted in the Vedas, it provides guidelines for constructing homes, temples, and towns in harmony with the five elements — Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akasha). The goal is to create living spaces where cosmic energy flows freely, promoting physical health, mental peace, and material prosperity.

The core principle of Vastu is the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a sacred geometric diagram that maps the eight cardinal directions to specific deities and elements. Each direction has a ruling deity: Kubera (North/Wealth), Yama (South/Dharma), Indra (East/Vitality), Varuna (West/Water), and the four intermediate directions governed by Ishanya, Agni, Nairutya, and Vayu. By aligning rooms and elements with these directional energies, a house becomes a microcosm of the universe.

For Telugu families, Vastu is deeply woven into daily life — from choosing an auspicious plot and building a new home to arranging the puja room and selecting a griha pravesham date. Our guides above cover every aspect of Vastu with practical, actionable tips that you can apply today, whether you are building a new house or improving an existing one.
