Chapter 17 — the story

Angirasa teaches Dhanalobha that the Self (atma) is distinct from the body, and stays the same through waking, dreaming and deep sleep.

He explains the meaning of "aham Brahmasmi" — that the Self is one with Brahman — as the root of the freedom Dhanalobha is seeking.

What this chapter teaches

Rituals are steps; the goal they point to is knowing the Self.

How to read the Karthika Puranam

  • Read or listen to one chapter each day of Karthika Masam, usually in the evening after lighting the deepam.
  • Many families read together after the pre-dawn Karthika snanam or at the Tulasi kota.
  • These are short summaries; for the full text, read a printed Karthika Puranam or listen to a pravachanam.
