Chapter 18 — the story
Dhanalobha becomes Angirasa's disciple. Angirasa praises the dawn river bath, above all in Karthika, Magha and Vaishakha. When Dhanalobha asks about Chaturmasya, Angirasa explains that it is the four months of Vishnu's sleep.
To tell how it began, he narrates how Narada once told Vishnu that people were neglecting their duties. Vishnu came to earth disguised as an old Brahmin (with Lakshmi, in some versions) to test them, then revealed his true form and went to Naimisharanya.
What this chapter teaches
The Lord watches how ordinary duties are kept — good deeds done daily are themselves worship.
How to read the Karthika Puranam
- Read or listen to one chapter each day of Karthika Masam, usually in the evening after lighting the deepam.
- Many families read together after the pre-dawn Karthika snanam or at the Tulasi kota.
- These are short summaries; for the full text, read a printed Karthika Puranam or listen to a pravachanam.
