Chapter 19 — the story
At Naimisharanya the sages praise Vishnu, and he offers them boons. Jnanasiddha asks only that his mind stay fixed on the Lord's feet.
Vishnu then teaches the Chaturmasya vow — the four months from Ashadha Shuddha Dashami/Ekadashi, when he lies down to sleep, to Karthika Shuddha Dwadashi, when he wakes. The common Telugu text adds that devotees give up leafy vegetables, then curd, then milk, then pulses, starting from the Shuddha Dashami of Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada and Ashwayuja. It is open to all. With this the Dhanalobha section ends.
What this chapter teaches
The best boon is steady devotion; the Chaturmasya vow, which ends in Karthika, is a way to build it.
How to read the Karthika Puranam
- Read or listen to one chapter each day of Karthika Masam, usually in the evening after lighting the deepam.
- Many families read together after the pre-dawn Karthika snanam or at the Tulasi kota.
- These are short summaries; for the full text, read a printed Karthika Puranam or listen to a pravachanam.
