Chapter 23 — the story

A voice from the sky directs Puranjaya to Srirangam on the Kaveri. He spends the whole of that Karthika month there worshipping Lord Ranganatha.

He returns to Ayodhya and rules justly. In old age he crowns his son, retires to the forest, keeps the Karthika vow every year, and at the end of his life reaches Vaikuntha. Puranjaya's story ends here.

What this chapter teaches

Keeping Karthika year after year turns a vow into a way of life — and leads to liberation.

How to read the Karthika Puranam

  • Read or listen to one chapter each day of Karthika Masam, usually in the evening after lighting the deepam.
  • Many families read together after the pre-dawn Karthika snanam or at the Tulasi kota.
  • These are short summaries; for the full text, read a printed Karthika Puranam or listen to a pravachanam.
