Chandra (Moon) is the mind of the cosmos — the karaka (significator) of emotions, mother, mental peace, and the subconscious. In South Indian astrology, your janma rashi (birth sign) is determined entirely by where the Moon was at the moment of your birth.

Chandra in Vedic Mythology

Chandra is the son of sage Atri and Anusuya, and was born from the ocean during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). He married the 27 Nakshatras, the daughters of Daksha, but favoured Rohini above all others. Enraged, Daksha cursed Chandra to wane and fade; Brahma intervened, decreeing that Chandra would wax and wane in a monthly cycle — the origin of the lunar phases.

Chandra — Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Chandra so important in Vedic astrology?

In Vedic astrology, the Moon (Chandra) is more important than the Sun for predicting life events. The janma rashi (birth rashi), nakshatra, and Vimshottari Dasha starting point are all calculated from the Moon's position at birth. A strong Moon produces mental stability, happiness, and good relationships.

What does Chandra's transit mean?

Chandra moves through all 12 rashis in approximately 27.3 days — about 2.25 days per sign. Its transit through your janma rashi (Moon sign at birth) is called Janma Chandra and can bring emotional sensitivity. Transit through the 8th from janma rashi (Ashtama Chandra) is considered the most challenging.

How long is the Chandra Mahadasha?

The Chandra Mahadasha lasts 10 years. This period generally brings matters of the mind, emotions, and relationships to the forefront. If Chandra is well-placed in the birth chart, this can be a highly creative, nurturing, and prosperous period.

What are the remedies for a weak Chandra?

Chandra remedies include wearing a Pearl (Moti) set in silver, offering milk to a Shiva Lingam on Mondays, reciting the Chandra Ashtottara, and fasting on Mondays. Caring for one's mother and keeping one's surroundings clean and orderly also strengthen Chandra.
