Surya in Vedic Mythology

Surya is the son of Aditi and the sage Kashyapa, born as one of the twelve Adityas. His brilliant radiance was so intense that his wife Sanjna could not bear to look upon him; Vishwakarma, her father, shaved away an eighth of his brilliance to make him bearable, from which sparks fell to earth and became divine weapons. Surya rides a chariot pulled by seven horses (representing the seven colours of light) driven by the devoted charioteer Aruna.
